Descriptions Using and Managing PPP Download
Point to Point Protocol, PPP, is used to make dynamic temporary connections to the Net and to remote computer controlled installations accessible by telephone. It's a fantastically flexible protocol usable with a huge variety of platforms, but it isn't straightforward.
Andrew Sun addresses practical issues with PPP usage in Windows 95/98 and NT as well as Solaris and Linux. He also covers the related subjects of authentication using CHAP, PAP and variants of these, talks about modems and serial connections along with DNS and ARP as they apply to PPP.
The majority of the book deals with practical matters of installation and implementation of PPP on various platforms but there's also an awful lot of theoretical and background information supplied with provides insights into the behind-the-scenes processes. This can be extremely useful for debugging a non-working PPP set up.
Necessarily, given the subject matter of the book, the structure of the content takes second place to the actual information it seeks to impart. This can make it a little tricky to find a specific item of information. On the other hand, the information appears pretty solid.
Anyone who needs to maintain dial-up connections on a network of any kind needs this book on the shelf. If it saves you half an hour sorting out one problem it's paid for itself. --Steve Patient, Must Read Books Of All Time .
